Leadership Lesson: Purpose of Business – What is the purpose of your business?

Do you have a written purpose / mission statement? Purpose > Goals > Tasks

Understanding our purpose in our personal lives helps us keep the main thing the main thing by focusing on the objective and eliminating distractions. Purpose helps us identify and shape our goals, which helps us focus on tasks that enable us to accomplish our goals and fulfill our purpose.

The order should be Purpose > Goals > Tasks, not Tasks > Goals > Purpose. Writing a purpose or mission statement for your company is a process that helps you identify why your business exists. It provides direction for everyone involved with your company. As a Christian businessman, your company’s purpose statement should begin with God and include glorifying God, identifying your customers, and making a profit.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Glorifying God includes carrying out God’s good, acceptable, and perfect will in dealing with customers, venders, employees, and partners. Companies exist to serve their customers needs. Identifying your customers might be straight forward or somewhat difficult depending on the nature of your business.

After meeting your employees needs, purchasing supplies, materials, paying venders, covering overhead, and meeting your needs; making a profit enables your company to withstand economic downturns, invest for the future, and invest in God’s work. Profit is not a bad word! Your purpose statement will provide a sense of purpose for all people inside and outside your company.
