A weekly blog to enlighten and encourage Christian business leaders to lead their business using biblical principles.
Business Principles of Nehemiah 12 (Celebrations) – Last week we looked at how Nehemiah organized those he was leading and how Organizational Charts help people understand how they fit in an organization. Is your Organizational Chart up-to-date?
In Chapter 12, Nehemiah leads in a celebration and dedication of the project completion, the new wall. We celebrate many things in life – religious holidays, sports victories, birthdays, wedding anniversaries. When a project is complete, do you schedule a celebration ceremony?
Why schedule a completion celebration? It shows your people you appreciate their efforts. It shows customers you appreciate their business. It forces a final completion date and helps transition from build to service. It can be good publicity. We often have ribbon cuttings for buildings, why not celebrate every project completion? Nehemiah even held a parade to get the peoples attention for the celebration!
The priests and Levites first dedicated themselves, then the people, the gates, and the wall. Nehemiah 12:30 NLT Principle: People First – Lead by first dedicating yourself to the ongoing support of the project. Whether the project is a deliverable piece of equipment, a building, or a computer program, it will require on-going support. Next, celebrate how this completed project will help people. If you’re leading in a secular company, how can you bring God into the celebration?
What principles of God’s can you share publically that made successful completion possible? Perhaps how one of God’s natural laws in creation made it possible. I remember seeing the announcement on the completion of the gnome project where one leader proudly remarked how great man is, while the other humbly said we have only learned how to map what God has already created! A subtle but effective witness.
Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Jesus said – When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas; he will be telling you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by revealing to you whatever he receives from me. John 16:13-14 NLT
Nehemiah 12:43 indicates the families were included. Do you include children in your celebrations so they will begin learning the importance of their parents work early in their lives?
When will be your next opportunity to schedule a celebration?
Bit of Wisdom
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 ESV
