A weekly blog to enlighten and encourage Christian business leaders to lead their business using biblical principles.
Business Principles – Last week finished looking at the leadership of Nehemiah. While he was an effective leader for twelve years, his absence for one year resulted in multiple problems. Are you providing consistent leadership using the Bible as your reference?
For the next few weeks we will examine the topics covered in the Business by the Book Workshop. God’s ways are often not our ways! For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. Isaiah 55:8 ESV Are your ways in business God’s ways? How do you know?
As our nation moves further away from God’s ways, we are all affected. Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17 ESV Is doing business God’s way best in the long run? Why?
Who owns your business? The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein. Psalm 24:1 ESV God owns it all, including small and large, private and public businesses.
Since God owns it all, we are stewards for the owner. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. 1 Corinthians 4:2 ESV How are you doing as a steward of God’s business?
If you are a faithful steward, why doesn’t business always go great? Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. Psalm 135:6 ESV God is not an absentee owner. He allows difficult circumstances to: 1. Accomplish His intentions; 2. Develop our character; 3. Discipline His wayward children (see Hebrews 12). Thankfully – And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Roman 8:28 ESV
Do you have a written purpose (mission) statement for your company? The purpose of a Christian owned business should include: 1. To glorify God; 2. To make a profit; 3. To support the work of Christ on planet Earth; 4. To impact people’s eternal destiny.
A recent AP report on the BP oil spill cleanup fund revealed one town bought tasers for their police department, in another a local politician bought an iPad, another bought a new notebook computer, and in another a local commissioner arranged for his girl friend to receive $14,000 for public relations work! This is an example of poor stewardship and wrong purpose of the clean up fund. The world’s philosophy is to get all you can, can all you get, and spoil the rest to drive the price up!!!
How can recognizing God as the owner keep you from compromises in your business? How might having a written and published purpose / mission statement for your business keep you from compromises, and heading in the right direction?
Bit of Wisdom
Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. 1 Chronicles 29:11 ESV
