Biblical Business Principles – Last week we looked at Counting the Cost. How are you doing at counting the cost in your business decisions?

This week we will look at Learning Organizations. Will your organization’s current base of knowledge and operating processes and procedures lead to future success? .

When things are going well our tendency is to assume success will continue indefinitely. When things are not going well, we know change is needed. However, the rate at which change occurs increases every year, consequently when nations and organizations stop learning, failure follows. Continuous learning is necessary.

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; Colossians 1:9-10 NKJV

Paul writing to the Colossian church wanted them to learn, gaining Biblical knowledge; apply the knowledge they learned thereby gaining wisdom and understanding; then put into practice what they were learning resulting in fruitfulness; and in the process, they will learn more about God.

Applying this to business organizations, people learn when we apply the following:

Standards – People don’t improve unless they know what better or ideal looks like. Leaders must establish and communicate standards and values, (the what) to help people learn.

Process – In addition to the what, people need to know how. People must also grasp the significance of the standards. Leaders must communicate the why and how.

Practice – As people learn the standards and apply them in the process, they will succeed and fail. The leaders in learning organizations understand this and plan for both success and failure. Are we learning from our successes and failures?

Feedback – People need to know how they are doing. Measuring against the established standards works for repeating processes. People respond better to teachers (helping them learn) than inspectors (pointing out flaws). When a person is working in new and uncharted areas where the standard is changing, they still need feedback.

As people work through this learning process, they learn, develop, and become capable of leading others through the learning process.
