Forums Focus A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we looked at the first Beatitude and how it relates to business with respect to humility. How is the humility factor, yours and other’s, in your business?

This week we will examine the second Beatitude from a business perspective. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4 ESV

We mourn when we loose someone or something. (I attended two funerals over the weekend and watched people mourn. Both of the deceased were Christians, and those that knew our Lord were comforted in their mourning.) How do you respond to loss in your business? The loss of a contract, loss of a customer, or a good employee? The promise is that you will be comforted when you face loss! Do you appropriately mourn losses and thereby learn from them, or do you sweep them under the rug?

A key to dealing with business loss preventatively is Philippians 4:4-7 ESV – Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Guarding against loss begins with rejoicing in the Lord, then praying. Then God’s peace which goes beyond human comprehension provides comfort. (The business I was leading before CBMC Staff was electrical / mechanical service for commercial / industrial customers. The key to our success was quality technicians. When I made an offer to an experienced potential employee, and he came to work for us, I was happy, regardless of how much I had prayed. However, I discovered that when I didn’t pray, and the potential employee said no, I mourned the loss – but, when I had prayed and he said no, I had peace. I found the same for contracts. When I prayed, Lord if this is right for the customer and our company please enable us to get it. When we didn’t get it I had peace.) Are you talking with God about your business opportunities that are also potential losses?

Another point, if you’re a steward of God’s business, it’s not your loss. You might be sad for God’s loss, but not for yourself. The Message interrupts Matthew 5:4 – You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you. Mourning helps us experience God in new ways. It also helps us discern who we believe is the real owner. Do you truly believe God owns it all, including your business? Do the people around you see your beliefs in your actions?
