Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we looked at the fourth Beatitude and how it relates to business with respect to righteousness. Are you experiencing God’s promise of satisfaction as you seek to do the right things in your business?

This week we will examine the fifth Beatitude from a business perspective. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Matthew 5:7 ESV

Mercy is one side of a coin with righteousness and justice on the other side. When you have right on your side, do you also demonstrate mercy?

Another perspective on mercy comes from Micah 6:8 NKJV – He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you? But to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? On one end of a continuum is Justice and on the other end Mercy. How can you balance Justice and Mercy? By walking humbly with our God who is both just and merciful.

People usually don’t change when it’s all justice because it is too hard (perceived perfection or perhaps perceived injustice because of having a different standard), and they don’t change when it is all mercy because it enables their status quo (continue in existing ways). Are you balanced in providing both justice and mercy as you lead in your business? At home?

As we meditate on mercy, the story of the Good Samaritan gives another aspect. When the Samaritan (perhaps he was a traveling businessman?) came upon the injured man, he took care of him, including paying the innkeeper for his room and board, and added if it runs more, I’ll cover it on my return trip. Generosity is an element of mercy. Are you a generous leader?

Jesus promises in the Beatitude as we give mercy we will receive mercy. Are you receiving mercy in your business life? If not, examine if you are giving mercy.

Bit of Wisdom
All praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NLT
