Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on how doctrine matters in all of life including business. Over the next few weeks we will explore further Mission, Vision and Core Value statements. Is what you state about your business in line with Scripture? Is having written statements worth the effort?

A Mission Statement describes why your business exists and what you do. A Vision Statement describes where you would be if you achieved your ultimate success. Core Value Statements delineate how you will do the Mission as you journey toward the Vision.

This week we will focus on Mission. What is your mission / purpose for being in business? Writing it helps you clarify and focus on the main reasons. Your Mission Statement should be short, to the point, and memorable.

How does your purpose / mission align with God’s revealed will as given in Scripture? Your Mission should be first to please God and then to serve man. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Roman 8:28 NLT
Does this include your business? Remember – You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail. Proverbs 19:21 NLT
Aligning with His purposes is critical to long term success!

Why is a Mission Statement important?
• It helps you think through why your business exists, what you do best (also what you should avoid through the process of elimination). Have you thought through your Mission?
• It helps employees clearly know the company mission so they can see how it fits their personal mission, and see how they can help carry it out. Do your employees know your Mission?
• It helps individual employees work together as a team. The one who plants and the one who waters work as a team with the same purpose. Yet they will be rewarded individually, according to their own hard work. 1 Corinthians 3:8 NLT What does this passage say to you? How does having a common purpose aid teamwork?
• It helps customer know what you do, and suppliers align with you to better serve you. Does your Mission Statement help people understand and align with your business?
• Web pages increase the need to communicate business missions clearly and with few words. A well thought through Mission Statement provides the framework for websites. Does your Mission come through clearly on your website? Does your website tell your story?

Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose. Philippians 2:2 NLT
A well thought through Mission Statement paves the way for working together in a business with one heart and purpose. Does one heart and purpose characterize your business?

Bit of Wisdom
If you keep yourself pure, you will be a utensil God can use for His purpose. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work. 2 Timothy 2:21 NLT
