Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Giving Counsel. Is the counsel you give others, whether business or personal, inline with Biblical Business Principles?

This week we will focus on the original Peter’s Principle. While the context of 1 Peter 5 is elders in the church, application can be made to Christian managers in businesses.

Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. 1 Peter 5:2-4 NLT

Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Care can include guiding and guarding. Do you see the people under you as being entrusted to you by God? Do you see those outside the company (customers, suppliers, professional services, etc.) as being entrusted to you by God?

Watch over it (the flock, these people God has entrusted to you) willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. When you see your position as a trust from God, and you’re serving Him, it is easier to be a servant leader avoiding leadership by coercion, control, and me centeredness motivated by the advantages and profits of your position. Have you asked God to grade your leadership lately? Have you asked those under your care?

Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. In the world leaders are often domineering, arrogant, dictatorial, and overbearing over those in their charge. They exert power over their followers, and the followers are supposed to serve them. Christlike servant-leaders serve their followers, and their followers empower them. As an ambassador for Christ, are you demonstrating to the people assigned to your care what they would see if Jesus was in your position?

And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. Can you think of a better reward in the future? Do you believe God is willing and able to reward you now?

Bit of Wisdom
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn your back on evil. Then you will gain renewed health and vitality. Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything your land produces. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with the finest wine. Proverbs 3:5-10 NLT
