Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Following Biblical Business Principles.  Do you find it easy or hard to follow Biblical Business Principles?

This week we will focus on Debt Dangers.  Debt is constantly in the news, fromGreeceto theUSA, Fannie Mae to GM, from ___ to ___ (fill in the blanks).  Are you in debt?  Business debt?  Personal debt?

Simply stated, debt is what owed from a sale or transaction either personal or business.  Is debt good or bad?  Is debt a tool to be used to leverage business success?  What are some Biblical Business Principles on debt?

Count the cost – But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if there is enough money to pay the bills? Luke 14:28 NLT  How many companies do you know about that have gone out of business because they didn’t realistically count the cost?

Servitude – Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7 NLT  As one businessman told me, “I’m not running this company, the bank is!”  The deeper the debt, the more control the lender rightly exerts.  Have you experienced a degree of servitude to a lender?

Obligation to repay – The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. Psalm 37:21 NLT  What does this verse say to you?  As Christians, do we have a higher obligation to repay?  Is our witness at stake?

Pay all your debts, except the debt of love for others. You can never finish paying that! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God’s law. Romans 13:8 NLT  The ESV translation states Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.  Debt Free = Freedom?

The Law of Moses stated – At the end of every seventh year you must cancel your debts.  Deuteronomy 15:1 NLT  Would lenders have even tighter standards then today if all debts were cancelled at the 7 year mark?  Would we be paying on items that are obsolete or worn out?

Are you debt free?  Do you sense the freedom that comes with being debt free?

If you have debt, is it under control?

If your debt is not under control, do you understand the truth of the above passages from God’s Word?

Do you sense God wants you to be debt free?  Do you believe He can help you become debt free?

Principles from the Business By the Book Workshop

  1. Avoid unnecessary borrowing.  Much borrowing presumes the future is predictable.
  2. Seek to avoid personally guaranteeing business debt. (More on this next week.)
  3. Avoid long term debt.

Some borrowing can be good, like for a new machine to improve your business capability, but have you examined the downside?  What if it doesn’t work out like you planned?  Have you gotten unbiased counsel?  Borrowing can keep you from doing the hard creative work of looking for alternatives that might result in a better solution.  Also, borrowing can enable you to delay facing current realities and making hard decisions now.

A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life. Proverbs 22:3-4 NLT  The title of this Forums Focus is Debt Dangers.  Debt is not forbidden, but we are warned about the dangers.  Is the biggest debt danger that we can move forward with our plans, without waiting on the Lord?

Bit of Wisdom

The LORD will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens to bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them. If you listen to these commands of the LORD your God and carefully obey them, the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always have the upper hand. Deuteronomy 28:12-13 NLT
