Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on the Lending. Are your business and personal lending practices in line with Biblical principles?
This week we will focus on Double Standards and honesty in business. We hear a lot about double standards in the media today. The Bible is clear The LORD despises double standards of every kind. Proverbs 20:10 NLT What comes to mind as you think about double standards?
The LORD despises double standards; he is not pleased by dishonest scales. Proverbs 20:23 NLT In Deuteronomy 25:13 God made it clear You must use accurate scales when you weigh out merchandise (NLT), the NIV translates Do not have two differing weights in your bag – one heavy, one light. Some sellers practice was, depending on who the buyer was, using a weight as the standard on the balance scale that was lighter than what it was supposed to be, therefore the buyer didn’t get what he paid for, and the seller made more profit. How does this relate to business today? Calibration and certification of scales and instruments used to measure tend to protect buyers from differing weights. But, what about other aspects of double standards? Do you price jobs on what the traffic will bare?
The LORD demands fairness in every business deal; he sets the standard. Proverbs 16:11 NLT In your advertising, contracts, and all business deals, do you present them to the Lord to see if they meet His standard? Do you pray requesting His approval?
Most Christian business people will do the right thing when it is a black or white issue, but most of business is in the shades of grey. Do not steal. Do not cheat one another. Do not lie. Leviticus 19:11 NLT The wrong path often begins with a lie, then cheating, and ultimately stealing. What grey areas are you facing in your business today?
The LORD hates cheating, but he delights in honesty. Proverbs 11:1 NLT Good people are guided by their honesty; treacherous people are destroyed by their dishonesty. Proverbs 11:3 NLT How does God use honesty to guide us?
May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in You. Psalm 25:21 How does God use honesty to protect us?
Acts 24:16 gives us excellent advice. (The context was Paul defending himself in court where he confessed that according to the Way, he worshipped God, believed everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets, and had a hope in God that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust.)
And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. KJV
In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men. NAS
So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man. ESV
So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man. NIV
Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and everyone else. NLT
Do you exercise yourself, do your best, take pains, strive, and maintain a blameless and clear conscience before God and man? Memorize this verse trusting God will protect and guide you as you use His standards as your standard in business and life.
Do you have any double standards?
