Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on People Problems. Are people problems taking too much of your time and energy?

This week we will focus on Purposes of Business. Business By The Book teaches there are four purposes: 1. To glorify God. 2. To make a profit. 3. To support the work of Christ. 4. To spiritually impact our sphere of influence. Are these included in your purposes for your business?

This week we’ll look at one aspect of spiritually impacting our sphere of influence with the Gospel.

Jesus explained His parable of the sower with his disciples. “The farmer I talked about is the one who brings God’s message to others. The seed that fell on the hard path represents those who hear the message, but then Satan comes at once and takes it away from them. The rocky soil represents those who hear the message and receive it with joy. But like young plants in such soil, their roots don’t go very deep. At first they get along fine, but they wilt as soon as they have problems or are persecuted because they believe the word. The thorny ground represents those who hear and accept the Good News, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the cares of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for nice things, so no crop is produced. But the good soil represents those who hear and accept God’s message and produce a huge harvest — thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted.” Mark 4:14-20 NLT

When we share God’s message with people we can expect 1 of 4 things to happen. Satan stops them from receiving it, or it doesn’t sink in and grow, or it gets crowded out by the cares of this life and the lure of wealth and things, or it takes root and grows. To get fruit you need a plant, to get a plant you sow seed. Are you sowing seed through your business? How?

Does your mission statement sow any seed? An example of sowing seed is Kelly & Associates Mission which is in their brochures and on their website:
Kelly & Associates Insurance Group, Inc. (KELLY) is an organization committed to the pursuit of excellence in an effort to bring honor and glory to God by:
• Providing our customers with quality products, benefits, and services… always putting “The Customer First”;
• Dealing honestly and professionally with our carriers and suppliers… representing them with integrity and excellence;
• Valuing our employees by treating them with dignity and respect… recognizing that it is the “People of KELLY” who make the unique difference, and thereby earning a reasonable return on the corporation’s investment.

What about adding an appropriate Proverb from the Bible to a newsletter? Ask God to show you how you can sow the seed, the Word of God, in and through your business.

Are you committed to seed sowing? Email me with examples of what you’re doing and I will share it with others.

Bit of Wisdom
Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed to shut out the light? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. Mark 4:21 NLT
