Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Purpose of Business and letting our light shine. Are people seeing and responding to yours and your company’s good deeds?
Business By The Book teaches four purposes for a business: 1. To glorify God. 2. To make a profit. 3. To support the work of Christ. 4. To spiritually impact our sphere of influence. How are you doing with each of these purposes?
This week we’ll continue focusing on spiritually impacting our sphere of influence – going beyond the norm.
Jesus taught – “If you are ordered to court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow. You have heard that the law of Moses says, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy’. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too. If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:40-48 NLT Why would Jesus teach such a radical standard of going beyond the norm?
When you go beyond the norm by going the extra mile, being a giver instead of a taker, loving those who cheat you, both personally and as a company, your actions will be seen, and your light will be shining. How is it possible to really do this?
Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 NLT
His mighty power is able to enable and empower us to successfully go beyond the norm. For I can do everything with the help of Christ who gives me the strength I need. Philippians 4:13 NLT To go beyond the norm, you will have to be experiencing God’s enabling power. Are you experiencing His power in your business?
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NLT Are you talking with God about what you need to go beyond the norm?
Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. 1 Peter 3:15 NLT Peter teaches our actions will reflect our worship. When people notice our going beyond the norm, we need to be ready to explain who is enabling and empowering us. Are people seeing your company going beyond the norm?
Bit of Wisdom
Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything. If you need wisdom — if you want to know what God wants you to do — ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can’t make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do. James 1:2-8 NLT
