Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Marketing. Does your marketing include maintaining a clear conscience as you present your company and its products / services?

This week we will focus on Problem Solving. If you don’t have any problems in your business, click delete and wait for next week’s Forums Focus!

As you encounter problems, do you focus more on the problem or more on the solution?

In Exodus 32 the problem facing Aaron was – When Moses failed to come back down the mountain right away, the people went to Aaron. “Look,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. This man Moses, who brought us here from Egypt, has disappeared. We don’t know what has happened to him.” Exodus 32:1 NLT Aaron focused on the problem and made a golden calf for the people to worship. The passage indicates the people liked the calf, and Aaron compounds the problem by building an alter in front of the calf and declared a festival!

Then the LORD told Moses, “Quick! Go down the mountain! The people you brought from Egypt have defiled themselves. They have already turned from the way I commanded them to live. They have made an idol shaped like a calf, and they have worshiped and sacrificed to it. They are saying, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of Egypt.'” Then the LORD said, “I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are. Now leave me alone so my anger can blaze against them and destroy them all. Then I will make you, Moses, into a great nation instead of them.” But Moses pleaded with the LORD his God not to do it. “O LORD!” he exclaimed. “Why are you so angry with your own people whom you brought from the land of Egypt with such great power and mighty acts? The Egyptians will say, ‘God tricked them into coming to the mountains so he could kill them and wipe them from the face of the earth.’ Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you are planning against your people! Remember your covenant with your servants — Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You swore by your own self, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven. Yes, I will give them all of this land that I have promised to your descendants, and they will possess it forever.'” So the LORD withdrew his threat and didn’t bring against his people the disaster he had threatened. Exodus 35:7-14 NLT

There are many theological points that can be drawn from this account, but we’ll focus on one thing. Aaron focused on the problem and a functional solution. Moses focused on a solution that aligned with God’s promises and ways, and the character issues that had created the problem. Aaron focused on the activity, Moses focused on the character issues driving the activity. Do you look beyond functional solutions in problem solving to the character issues which are often the root cause of the problem?

The outcome in Exodus 35 includes the 10 Commandments which remain a character standard today. Take a few minutes this Labor Day weekend and read Exodus 35.

As you solve business problems, do you look beyond the functional issues to the character issues?

Bit of Wisdom
Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything. If you need wisdom — if you want to know what God wants you to do — ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can’t make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do. James 1:3-8 NLT
