Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Taking Stock. Do you accurately know the state of your business?

This week we will focus on Business Bondage. Business bondage comes in many forms. How do you define business bondage?

Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:13 NLT While the reference in this verse is to money, we can’t serve two masters regardless of what or who the masters are. Anything that gets in front of our serving God can be the other master. If we say, “God I’ll serve you IF___, or we say “God I’ll serve you BUT or WHEN___; we are putting the IF’s, BUT’s and WHEN’s in front of God!

The opposite of business bondage is spiritual freedom in business. In Luke 9:57-62 NLT we read: As they were walking along someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you no matter where you go.” But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head.” He said to another person, “Come, be my disciple.” The man agreed, but he said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.” Jesus replied, “Let those who are spiritually dead care for their own dead. Your duty is to go and preach the coming of the Kingdom of God.” Another said, “Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family.” But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.” Why would Jesus tell the person to not go home and bury his father? I’ve heard many explanations over the years on this passage – I’ll let the Holy Spirit interpret the meaning for you. Jesus also said, “If you want to be my follower you must love me more than your own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters — yes, more than your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26 NLT

Larry Burkett’s Business By The Book book lists 5 symptoms of business bondage. Rate yourself on each area.
1. An air of superiority. Because many small business owners did build their businesses, it’s easy to lose your humility.
2. Overwork. Do you follow the priorities of God, Family, Vocation, Ministry? How many hours in a typical week do you invest in each?
3. Excessive use of credit. Is debt a bondage for you?
4. Disorganization. Different personalities and different occupations cause a variety of organization personality types. Are you where you should be in this area?
5. A Get-Rich-quick-Mentality. Do you put profits over people? Is greed a bondage for you?

To what degree are you in business bondage? Invest some time to talk it over with God – today!

Bit of Wisdom
For no one can lay any other foundation than the one we already have — Jesus Christ. Now anyone who builds on that foundation may use gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But there is going to come a time of testing at the judgment day to see what kind of work each builder has done. Everyone’s work will be put through the fire to see whether or not it keeps its value. If the work survives the fire, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builders themselves will be saved, but like someone escaping through a wall of flames. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 NLT
