Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Financial Fitness in Business (Ownership). Do you function as if God owns it all?
This week we will focus on Financial Fitness in Business (Lending). Do you lend money in your business?
Unless you’re in financial services, most will say, “No.” BUT, do you have accounts receivables? Unless you receive cash immediately for every product or service, you lend money. What are Biblical Business Principles on lending?
The Bible does not prohibit lending (or borrowing), but it does give us guidelines for dealing with people. Do you have a consistent, fair policies and procedures for issuing credit? If a potential customer is offended, perhaps you will have prevented yourself from having a bad debt. Do you extend credit just to get a job? Which is worse, no work because you refused to extend credit; or a bad debt where you paid for all your expenses (labor / materials)? This is like a double loss (less income, more expenses).
Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won’t be faithful in large ones. If you cheat even a little, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. Luke 16:10 NLT This verse guides us to examine faithfulness. Checking credit will help you discern if a person or company is faithful in paying their bills. How do you measure faithfulness in making decisions to extend credit (which in reality is lending money)?
Making wise lending decisions requires diligent work. It is tempting to look at the potential profit and ignore the potential loss. Now, a person who is put in charge as a manager must be faithful. 1 Corinthians 4:2 NLT Since God owns it all and we are managing His business – are you faithful in checking the faithfulness of potential customers?
But what about Jesus teaching in Luke 6? Love your enemies! Do good to them! Lend to them! And don’t be concerned that they might not repay. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to the unthankful and to those who are wicked. Luke 6:34 NLT Read Luke chapter 6 to get the full context of Jesus’ teaching. When God leads you to lend His resources even if the credit check looks questionable, do it!
Do you need to reconsider your lending practices?
