Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Financial Fitness in Business (Collecting). Are your collection policies and practices in line with Biblical Business Principles?
This week we will focus on Financial Fitness in Business (Borrowing). What does the Bible teach on debt? How much debt is too much?
The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are generous givers. Psalm 37:21 NLT Does this verse really mean we need to repay all our debts or be labeled wicked? Does bankruptcy negate this verse?
Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender. Proverbs 22:7 NLT Have you experienced the truth of this verse? Does deeper debt mean deeper bondage?
Look here, you people who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog — it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. James 4:13-14 NLT Do you consider the presumption factor in your business borrowing?
Dr. Ben Carson has a great set of questions to ask yourself when making decisions that can be applied when making borrowing decisions.
1. What’s the best thing that can happen if you borrow the money?
2. What’s the worst thing that can happen if you borrow the money?
3. What’s the best thing that can happen if you don’t borrow the money?
4. What’s the worst thing that can happen if you don’t borrow the money?
(Try this simple 4 question test on any decision you’re facing substituting your issue for borrowing.)
In Deuteronomy 28 there are promises for obedience. Verse 12 – The LORD will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens to bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them. Later in the chapter there are stern warnings for disobedience. If it has been awhile since you’ve read the blessings and curses of Deuteronomy 28, I encourage you to take a few minutes and read it. This chapter, while referring to the nation of Israel, can be applied to our nation, our business, and our personal life. Which describes your nation? Your business? Your personal life?
Next week we will dig deeper on the dangers of debt.
Bit of Wisdom
Pay all your debts, except the debt of love for others. You can never finish paying that! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God’s law. Romans 13:8 NLT
