Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Financial Fitness in Business (Borrowing). Do you have debt? If yes, is your debt under control or is it bondage for you?
This week we will focus on Financial Fitness in Business (Dangers of Debt). Why does God warn us about debt in the Bible? What are the potential perils of borrowing (debt)? Business By The Book lists three dangers of debt.
Borrowing can cause you to miss God’s direction. Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
What was God’s original plan? He provided everything in the Garden of Eden. After sin He revised the plan – thorns and thistles and hard work. Was the hard work decree for Adam’s good? Was it therapy for Adam? Does debt enable us to take short cuts? Is borrowing easier than truly trusting God? Is debt a symptom of a larger problem of I’ll do it my way? How can you know for sure if your proposed borrowing is God’s will?
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NLT
Borrowing can delay necessary decisions. A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences. True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life. Proverbs 22:3-4 NLT
If your output (expenses) exceeds your input (revenue), then your upkeep (maintaining) will become your downfall! Our federal government provides a clear example of borrowing instead of making the tough decisions to reduce the spending. Delaying tough decisions by borrowing is not solving the underlying problem. Have you ever borrowed instead of making the tough decision to reduce expenses, shut down an operation, or ___? Do you have a group of trusted Christian business people who will ask you the tough questions and give you biblically based counsel? Why is it easier to see other’s problems than our own? (Why are my ideas are always good?!?)
Borrowing can create unnecessary pressures. Stay away from the love of money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5 NLT
Does living with debt create more stress than living without debt? Where are you on the continuum of debt free through debt burdened? How far up the scale (from debt free to debt burden) should you go? While we are and have been under artificially low interest rates, what will happen when the rates rise? Why do we have a mindset of borrowing to expand business instead of saving to expand business?
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28 NLT
Much of what the Bible teaches on debt is principles, not commands. God doesn’t prohibit borrowing, but He does refer to people who don’t repay as evil (see Psalm 37:20). The principles are for our good. How much credit would your bank extend if all debts were forgiven on the 7th year as in the Law of Moses (see Deuteronomy 15)?
Next week we’ll look at the issue of surety.
Bit of Wisdom
So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:8-10 NLT
