Forums Focus A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Biblical Standards for Business (Steadfastness). Are you Christlike in your steadfastness?

This week we will focus on Biblical Standards for Business (Love). How does love fit in as a Biblical Standard for Business? This is business – isn’t love for the family, maybe the neighborhood?

Biblical words for love include eros (sensual Hollywood type love), phileo (brotherly love), and agape (unconditional love). Each is legitimate when correctly used. “Eros love is egoistic. It says, “My first and last consideration is myself.” Phileo love is mutualistic. It says, “I will give as long as I receive.” Agape love, on the other hand, is altruistic, saying, “I will give, requiring nothing in return.”” – Norman Geisler

Agape love is how God loves us, and how we can love others as we allow Christ to love through us enabled by the Holy Spirit. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8 NLT How frequently do you remember this truth?

Jesus taught – But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too. If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:44-48 NLT

Do you have any enemies you need to love? Competitors or customers who cheated or lied about you? The first session of the Business By The Book Workshop gives an excellent example of an owner who was cheated by a trusted ex-employee. He responded in love by having his engineering department work to find a fix for the ex-employee turned competitor’s product problem. The world would say, “You’re crazy!” This owner understood the agape love of God, and shared it in deed. Is God presenting an opportunity to demonstrate agape love in your business life?

Bit of Wisdom
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT
