CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Company Aroma. What is the aroma people smell when they are around your company?
This week we will focus on the Decision Making: 3 Hinges. When you have critical long-term decisions to make, how do you assure you are in line with God’s will?
A simple but effective formula is illustrated by a 3 hinge door. Most likely your office door has 3 hinges. The 3 hinges must be in line with each other for the door to work properly. The 3 Hinges are:
Hinge 1 – What does the Bible say about the decision you’re facing? If it says don’t do it, stop. If it says do it, or doesn’t directly address the situation, go to Hinge 2. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT What does the Bible say about a decision you’re facing? There are many good Bible websites available to help you do the research. (I’m amazed at how effective Google is for biblical research.)
Hinge 2 – What does your inner impulse reveal? While we like to think our inner impulses are from the Holy Spirit, they might be our own desires or our self talk. If the inner impulse lines up with Hinge 1, God’s Word, move to
Hinge 3. The Holy Spirit will never lead us to something unholy, or lead us counter to the Bible. But we know these things because God has revealed them to us by his Spirit and his Spirit searches out everything and shows us even God’s deep secrets. No one can know what anyone else is really thinking except that person alone, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And God has actually given us his Spirit (not the world’s spirit) so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 NLT What are your inner impulses revealing about a decision you’re facing?
Hinge 3 – What do the outer circumstance reveal? Sometimes we can be in line with God’s Word, and our inner impulses are in line, but the outer circumstances just don’t line up. Our timing might not be right. God often uses circumstances to adjust our timing. He also uses circumstances to teach us as He delays us Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would really obey his commands. Deuteronomy 8:2 NLT The 11 day trip to the Holy Land took 40 years, but they did get there!
While the 3 Hinge formula is simple, when you apply it to a complex decision, it becomes complex. Write out your answers to the 3 Hinges so you can review and meditate on them, and watch God help you work through the decision process.

“Ask me for a sign, Ahaz, to prove that I will crush your enemies as I have promised. Ask for anything you like, and make it as difficult as you want.” Isaiah 7:11 NLT
