CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principles – Last week we focused on Existing Teams. Do you have a clear understanding about being unequally yoked in business?
This week we will focus on Profit. What is your perspective on profit? What does the Bible say about profit?
Merriam Webster dictionary defines profit as: 1. a valuable return, GAIN; 2. the excess of returns over expenditure in a transaction or series of transactions; especially the excess of the selling price of goods over their cost; 3. net income usually for a given period of time; 4. the ratio of profit for a given year to the amount of capital invested or to the value of sales; 5. the compensation accruing to entrepreneurs for the assumption of risk in business enterprise as distinguished from wages or rent
“Profits are the normal by-product of a well-run business and should be considered as both normal and honorable. If a business cannot generate profits, it will fail, and its ministry to employees and customers will cease.” – Business By The Book
Some in our society mistakenly think profit is a 4 letter word. As stated above, profits are necessary for a Christian business to minister to employees and customers. If your output exceeds your input, then your upkeep will become your downfall! Is your business profitable?
The ones who can live here are those who are honest and fair, who reject making a profit by fraud, who stay far away from bribes, who refuse to listen to those who plot murder, who shut their eyes to all enticement to do wrong. These are the ones who will dwell on high. The rocks of the mountains will be their fortress of safety. Food will be supplied to them, and they will have water in abundance. Isaiah 33:15-16 NLT Are these words from Isaiah true today?
Even the king milks the land for his own profit! Those who love money will never have enough. How absurd to think that wealth brings true happiness! Ecclesiastes 5:9-10 NLT How do you guard against the love of money as you work and make a profit?
Look here, you people who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog — it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you will be boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil. Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. James 4:13-16 NLT How do you keep the Lord’s will at the forefront as you work to make a profit?
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Matthew 16:26 ESV What do you do to keep from forfeiting your soul as you work to make a profit so you can minister to employees and customers?
Bit of Wisdom
Work brings profit, but mere talk leads to poverty! Proverbs 14:23 NLT
