CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principle
Last time we focused on Giving Rebukes. Do you seek God’s wisdom before you rebuke others?
This week we will focus on Closing a Sale. While we’re not all in sales positions, we are all involved in sales. (We all “sell” our ideas!) Over the next few weeks the Forums Focus will be stimulated by Section 4 of the book Jesus in the 9 – 5, by Dennis E. Hensley, PhD.
BELIEVE IN THE PRODUCT YOURSELF
We have all experience sales people who were just giving the pitch. If you believe in something your presentation is more convincing, conversely if you don’t really believe in what you’re presenting your presentation becomes a pitch.
Confidence – We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have been honest and sincere in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own earthly wisdom. That is how we have acted toward everyone, and especially toward you. 2 Corinthians 1:12 NLT Believing in what your presenting enables you to present with confidence and a clear conscience, if you are honest and sincere. As you present your product or service or idea do you maintain a conscience void of offence toward God and man? (Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and everyone else. Acts 24:16 NLT) Questions to ask yourself include: Does the customer need this? Will the customer benefit? Is this the right solution for the customer’s problem? Will this be good for our company? But most importantly, have I prayed seeking God’s wisdom? Confidence enables credibility.
Credibility – When I am with the Gentiles who do not have the Jewish law, I fit in with them as much as I can. In this way, I gain their confidence and bring them to Christ. But I do not discard the law of God; I obey the law of Christ. 1 Corinthians 9:21 NLT Paul was credible because he fit in with people as much as he could. Do you fit in with people, as much as you can, by seeking to see from their point of view?
How does this fit in with sharing your faith? Sharing your faith is not selling, but it is presenting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Do you have confidence that comes from believing with all your heart? Do you fit in with non-christians as much as you can, sharing to their need so you don’t sound like a pitch man?
Bit of Wisdom
Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 NLT
A book, Jesus In The 9 to 5 – Facing The Challenges of Today’s Business World by Dennis E. Hensley, addresses what it might look like if Jesus ran a company in 2014.
