CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principle
Last week we focused on Debt Bondage. Are you in bondage because of debt?
This week we will focus on Debt Warnings. What does the best business handbook, the Bible, instruct on debt?
Debt can presume on the future –
Look here, you people who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what will happen tomorrow? For your life is like the morning fog — it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you will be boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil. Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender. James 4:13-17 NLT Before you enter into debt, be sure it is God’s will for you. If God is your Master (not money), how will He let you know if you should go ahead and borrow the money?
Debt can provide a short cut, a means to an end that perhaps God was going to provide in a better way –
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NLT Before you enter into debt, how can you be sure it is God’s plan A? Will this transaction result in God getting glory?
Next week we’ll look at debt from a lender’s perspective.
Bit of Wisdom
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything your land produces. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with the finest wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 NLT
