CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principle
Last week we focused on Debt Warnings. How do you assure it is God’s will before entering debt?

This week we will focus on a Biblical Perspective on Debt. If we’re not careful, we can adopt an attitude that all debt is bad. How do you view debt? How did you come to that perspective?

Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow. Matthew 5:42 NLT Why would Jesus teach that we should lend to someone who wants to borrow from us if all debt is bad?

Jesus takes it a step further in Luke 6:35 – Love your enemies! Do good to them! Lend to them! And don’t be concerned that they might not repay. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to the unthankful and to those who are wicked. NLT If we’re even to lend to our enemies, can all debt be viewed as bad?

Jesus taught about giving and lending; if there is lending there is debt for the person receiving the loan. As previously focused on in Forums Focus, debt can enslave (Proverbs 22:7) and we must pay back our debts (Psalm 37:21). And as focused on last week, debt can be used to proceed where God is not leading.

Do you view debt as good or bad? Which debt is good and which debt is bad?

Bit of Wisdom
Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and import duties, and give respect and honor to all to whom it is due. Pay all your debts, except the debt of love for others. You can never finish paying that! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God’s law. Romans 13:7-8 NLT
