CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.

Biblical Business Principle
Last week we focused on Work & Rest. Are you enjoying a holy day of rest from your normal work?

This week we will focus on Working With Purpose. Since work existed before the Fall and work after the Fall is much harder and more difficult, can we work with a higher purpose each day?

The Westminster Confession states the chief end (purpose) of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. All who claim me as their God will come, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them. Isaiah 43:7 NLT Are you glorifying God through your work? Through your company?

While the Fall changed the nature of work, it did not eliminate the purposes given by God at creation. Since business is a channel for work in our times, what are God’s purposes for business?

The purpose of a business is to glorify God through the business by operating the business in a manner consistent with Biblical Business Principles including:
• Recognize God as the true owner
• Make a profit so the business can continue
• Provide opportunities for people to have meaningful work
• Pay employees just compensation
• Provide safe working conditions
• Honor employees families
• Safeguard God’s creation
• Comply with all applicable laws
• Be honest with all
• Support God’s Kingdom on Earth
• Honor peoples’ religious freedom including keeping the Sabbath and day of rest
• Reflect God’s intended balance of beauty and function
(Note: The above list is not in order of importance.)

Over the weeks ahead we will explore each of these Biblical Business Principles.

Take a moment now, or if you don’t have time now when you do, invest a few minutes and concentrate and meditate on the following passage:

God’s purpose was to show his wisdom in all its rich variety to all the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms. They will see this when Jews and Gentiles are joined together in his church. This was his plan from all eternity, and it has now been carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord. Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come fearlessly into God’s presence, assured of his glad welcome. So please don’t despair because of what they are doing to me here. It is for you that I am suffering, so you should feel honored and encouraged. When I think of the wisdom and scope of God’s plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit. And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him. May your roots go down deep into the soil of God’s marvelous love. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now glory be to God! By his mighty power at work within us, he is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. May he be given glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever through endless ages. Amen. Ephesians 3:10-21 NLT

Does meditating on this help you see a higher purpose in your work? In your business?

Bit of Wisdom
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28 NLT
