CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principle
Last week we focused on Working With Purpose – Profit. Are you following God’s leading so your company makes a fair profit enabling it to continue providing products / services to customers, employment for employees, and a return for owners and investors?
This week we will focus on Working With Purpose – Employee Pay. One of the purposes of a company is to pay employees just compensation. Are your employees receiving just compensation? Do they think so?
The following are some Biblical Business Principles for paying just compensation:
For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The wages you held back cry out against you. The cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. James 5:4 NLT How do you determine if you’re paying a just wage?
What are the consequences of not paying a just wage? And the LORD says, “Destruction is certain for Jehoiakim, who builds his palace with forced labor. By not paying wages, he builds injustice into its walls and oppression into its doorframes and ceilings.” He says, “I will build a magnificent palace with huge rooms and many windows, paneled throughout with fragrant cedar and painted a lovely red.” But a beautiful palace does not make a great king! Why did your father, Josiah, reign so long? Because he was just and right in all his dealings. That is why God blessed him. Jeremiah 22:13-15 NLT What a contrast between father and son and the blessings of a just God. Must a company pay just wages to receive blessings of a just God?
Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than ordinary people. Proverbs 22:29 NLT
Competency is to be rewarded. Does your pay scale reward competency? How do you measure competency?
A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things. Proverbs 18:9 NLT
Lack of effort is not to be rewarded. Does your pay scale reward effort? How do you measure effort?
Abilities and faithfulness are both qualities of good employees and both should be considered in pay decisions. Do you have a pay review process that assures you’re paying a just wage to each employee?
Bit of Wisdom
When people work, their wages are not a gift. Workers earn what they receive. Romans 4:4 NLT
