Biblical Business Principle
Last week we focused on Working with Purpose – Safeguard God’s Creation. Is your business helping or hindering God’s creation?
This week we will focus on Working with Purpose – Comply With All Applicable Laws. With our country drifting further and further away from God’s laws as given in the Bible, and with our government(s) passing laws upon laws; what do we do?
Obey the government, for God is the one who put it there. All governments have been placed in power by God. Romans 13:1 Does this include all governments or just the ones we agree with?
So you must obey the government for two reasons: to keep from being punished and to keep a clear conscience. Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid so they can keep on doing the work God intended them to do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and import duties, and give respect and honor to all to whom it is due. Pay all your debts, except the debt of love for others. You can never finish paying that! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God’s law. Romans 13:5-8 NLT Does this include all governmental laws or just the ones we agree with? (If it has been awhile since you’ve read Romans 13, make a note to invest a few minutes to read it this weekend.)
The Apostle Paul when making his case to the governor stated – Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience before God and everyone else. Acts 24:16 NLT The King James translation states – And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. Do you strive to maintain a clear conscience before both God and man?
Is there ever a time you should break man’s law? Then they brought the apostles in before the council. “Didn’t we tell you never again to teach in this man’s name?” the high priest demanded. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about Jesus, and you intend to blame us for his death!” But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than human authority. Acts 5:27-29 NLT God’s law trumps man’s law. But we need to be sure it is God’s law and not our opinion or desire. Before taking action, we need to seek Godly counsel, and do everything openly maintaining a clear conscience before God and man. Have you ever had a situation where you needed to break man’s law in order to obey God’s law?
How do you assure your company is complying with all applicable laws?
Bit of Wisdom
For the word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are. Nothing in all creation can hide from him. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes. This is the God to whom we must explain all that we have done. Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT
