CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Last week we focused on Working with Purpose – Support God’s Kingdom on Earth. How effectively are you supporting God’s Kingdom on Earth?
This week we will focus on Working with Purpose – Honor People’s Religious Freedom. Religious freedom was a major factor in the founding of the United States. The first amendment of the U. S. Constitution says that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. No state religion and no prohibiting our free exercise of religion. Religious freedom is becoming a major issue in business. Some cases come to mind including the Hobby Lobby case, a wedding photographer who refused to do a gay wedding because she sees her work as telling a story and told the potential customer she would not do them a good job, and a baker who refused to bake a cake for a homosexual wedding. But rather than focus on these issues which are important, let’s explore honoring people’s religious freedom.
Religious freedom was the motive behind many of the people who first came to America and was paramount to our founding fathers. Do you honor people’s freedom of religion?
Jesus talked with the rich young ruler – But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Matthew 19:22 NLT Jesus did not pursue him, He respected his freedom of religion. (By the way, this was the only person Jesus told to go sell everything, give it to the poor, and follow Him.)
Jesus taught – The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. John 6:63 NLT We need to share with people the Best News in Life, The Gospel; but we also need to honor people’s freedom of religion. How effectively are you doing both in your business life?
Bit of Wisdom
“But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 NLT
