Biblical Business Principle
Last week we focused on the Lord’s Prayer – As we forgive them that trespass against us. Are you current with forgiving those who have crossed you in business and your personal life?
This week we will focus on the Lord’s Prayer – And lead us not into temptation. Does God tempt anyone? Does God allow temptation? James helps us differentiate between external trials and internal temptations.
Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything. If you need wisdom — if you want to know what God wants you to do — ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can’t make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do. James 1:3-8 NLT We are to be joyful in trials, knowing that when our faith is tested our endurance develops leading to strong character. Are you facing any trials in your business or personal life? Are you counting it all joy? If not, focus on the process: Trial > Faith test > Endurance development > Character. And if you still have no joy and don’t know what you should be doing, have a long talk with God. Note: The King James uses the word temptation in this passage, all the newer translations use trial or trouble. God blesses the people who patiently endure testing. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12 NLT
And remember, no one who wants to do wrong should ever say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else either. Temptation comes from the lure of our own evil desires. These evil desires lead to evil actions, and evil actions lead to death. So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven’s lights. Unlike them, he never changes or casts shifting shadows. James 1:13-17 NLT James makes it clear, God does not tempt us! Our temptations come from the pull of the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Are you facing any temptations in your business or personal life? How did Jesus handle temptation?
A case study of temptation comes from Joshua 7:21 in the life of Achan – For I saw a beautiful robe imported from Babylon, two hundred silver coins, and a bar of gold weighing more than a pound. I wanted them so much that I took them. They are hidden in the ground beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.” NLT The world system, ours or others flesh, and / or the Devil tempt us – we see it, want it, take action on it, then out of our guilt hide it. Are your eyes seeing something you know is wrong? Are you tempted to do business NOT by The Book?
So why do we pray lead us not into temptation?
We’ve cover from the traditional Lord’s Prayer (from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, 1662) –
Our Father, which art in heaven.
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom Come
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive them that trespass against us
Next week we’ll cover –
But deliver us from evil.
In the future we’ll cover –
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Bit of Wisdom
Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world. And this world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever. 1John 2:15-17 NLT
