CBMC Forums Focus: A weekly blog to enlighten, encourage and equip Christian business leaders to lead in business using Biblical Business Principles.
Biblical Business Principle
Last time we focused on Representative Priorities. Are you representing God well as your top priority?
This week we will focus on Jesus and Business. Is Jesus interested in business in general and in your business in particular?
One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. Luke 5:1-3 NLT Jesus needed to use Simon’s boat for ministry. Simon responded to His request. Is Jesus using your business for ministry? Are you seeking and seeing opportunities?
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” Luke 5:4-5 NLT Jesus gave an instruction, Simon Peter applied his previous experience to the instruction and based on his experience said – won’t work! BUT, if you say so I will follow your instruction. Do you sometimes find yourself questioning the Holy Spirit’s instructions based on your experiences? BUT, do you then respond in obedience?
And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. Luke 5:6-7 NLT What does Jesus know about business today? Have you experienced His blessing as you obeyed the Holy Spirit’s instructions? (Remember – Jesus is in you in the form of the Holy Spirit.)
When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. Luke 5:8-11 NLT When Jesus blesses people are awestruck and amazed. Can this type of business blessing occur today? Are you listening for and responding to instructions from the Holy Spirit for your business? Is Jesus using your business for His ongoing ministry that continues today?
Simon Peter was called to leave his business and go into full time vocational ministry. Today, some are called into full time vocational ministry; but all Christians are called to full time ministry. Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NLT This instruction starts with the first disciples and continues through us until Christ returns! Are you using your business to make disciples?
Bit of Wisdom
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:17, 23-24 NLT
