Last time we focused on Financial Review: Collection.  Do your collection procedures help or hinder people seeing God?

This week we will continue to review Business By The Book principles focusing on Human Resources: Hiring Decisions.  Good employees make good companies, bad employees…  Are your hiring procedures working?

A good hiring process results in God being honored, the company getting the right person for the job, and the hired person getting the right job for him or her.

The Business By The Book Workshop lists 8 Steps for hiring as follows:

Step 1 – Pray.  Ask God, “Is this the right person for us, and the right job for them?”  You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. John 16:24 NLT

Step 2 – Define the job clearly.  A written Job Description helps you think through the position, and helps the prospect understand what you’re looking for.

Step 3 – Hire the best person for the job.  Invest time to check references and evaluate past performance and experiences.  Does the person who says they have 15 years experience really have 15 years, or do they have 5 years then kept repeating the 5th year over and over for 10 years?  Will this person be an addition to the team adding both skills and attitude?

Step 4 – Match the person to the job.  Consider what assessment tools such as personality tests and career assessment tools might be used.  Discuss your core values with the prospect.  Do your core values align?

Step 5 – Think through crucial issues ahead of time such as government regulations.

Step 6 – Establish a trial period.  Business By The Book suggests a 90 day trial period for both parties to move from I think so to I know so.

Step 7 – Examine the character of the prospect.  Reputation is what people say, character is what people are.  Go back to Step 1.  Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NLT  Do you have God’s peace about this hire?  God can see what we can’t see.

Step 8 – Consider meeting the spouse.  When I was hiring electrical mechanical service technicians we made it a policy to stop by the home, meet the spouse, and observe the home.  Extra effort on the front end can save expenses on the back end!

Do you read the Proverb chapter for the day?  Proverbs is divided into 31 chapters.  On the 2nd of the month read Proverbs chapter 2.  This simple 5 minute investment of your time will provide Godly wisdom for every area of business, including hiring decisions.
